Ο μύκητας Fusarium oxysporum έχει μελετηθεί αρκετά, εξαιτίας της ικανότητάς του να προκαλεί ασθένειες σε σημαντικά από οικονομικής πλευράς φυτικά είδη. Ο μύκητας F. oxysporum ανήκει στην οικογένεια Tuberculariacae της τάξης Moniliales των Ατελών Μυκήτων. Σχηματίζει δύο ειδών κονίδια: τα μακροκονίδια και τα μικροκονίδια καθώς κα τα ανθεκτικά στις αντίξοες περιβαλλοντικές συνθήκες χλαμυδοσπόρια. Ο μύκητας παρουσιάζει μεγάλη μορφολογική και φυσιολογική παραλλακτικότητα, με αποτέλεσμα παλαιότερα να ταξινομούταν σε πολλά διαφορετικά είδη. Αργότερα, όμως, οι Snyder & Hansen ενοποίησαν όλα αυτά τα είδη στο είδος F. oxysporum, στο οποίο έχουν αναγνωριστεί μέχρι σήμερα περισσότερες από 120 ειδικές μορφές και φυλές καθώς επίσης πολυάριθμα μη-παθογόνα στελέχη. Λόγω της μεγάλης εξάπλωσης των τελευταίων είναι δυνατόν να οδηγηθούμε στη λογική υπόθεση της καταγωγής των παθογόνων από μη-παθογόνους προγόνους (Gordon T. R., Martyn R. D. 1997).

Were realised enough experiments in NA.GR.E.F for the identification of pathotypes οn Fusarium oxysporum. They are two pathotypes of Fusarium oxysporum that offends the melon. The Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis and the Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum. In natural conditions the Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis offends the melon. In the experiments that were realised in NA.GR.E.F we discovered that Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-cucumerinum it offends in natural conditions the melon.
