Abstract
Background:Οur study degree is based on the reflection and efforts of the phenomenon of domestic violence, especially of women against their partners. In oursociety this type of violence has gradually increased and is hard to distinguish because ithappens “behind closed doors”. Methods: Α cross –sectional study was undertaken among 205 women, aged 18-65, which were residents of Athens who were married to their partners for a minimum of 12 months and were also Greek colonials. The questionnaire used was culturally adopted and a pilot test was taken on 30 individuals. It examined the socio-demographic characteristics of the participants, the rate of the Intimate Partner Violence victimization and the IPV perpetration (Physical, sexual,Psychological/emotional,) the experience of family during childhood and the level of participants’ self esteem. Results: Men accept the spousal abuse in the same rate as women. This confirm that women are not the only victims of domestic violence. As it seems by our research the low self esteem has a great connection to the increase of the probabilities to use or to accept any of the forms of domestic violence. This sort of research would speculate that this problem should be investigating in greater depth for men as much as women.
