This thesis investigates the political sentiment expressed on Twitter/X during the Greek National Elections of 2023 through the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Sentiment Analysis techniques. The primary objective of the study is to explore the relationship between digital political discourse, political polarization, and political visibility, while also examining the potential and limitations of sentiment analysis in understanding political communication within social media environments. The research was based on a curated dataset consisting of approximately 200 Greek political tweets, which were manually collected during the pre-election period of the 2023 national elections. The analysis was conducted using Python in the Google Colab environment and included text preprocessing, normalization of political entities and terms, as well as manual sentiment annotation into three categories: positive, negative, and neutral. As part of the exploratory analytical framework, several techniques were employed, including frequency analysis, word cloud generation, bigram analysis, comparative sentiment analysis, political entity analysis, and temporal sentiment analysis. In addition, basic statistical tests were performed, including Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient and the Independent Samples t-test, in order to investigate potential relationships between political visibility and sentiment intensity. The findings revealed a clear predominance of negative sentiment within the examined dataset, accounting for 68% of all tweets. Furthermore, the results highlighted high levels of political polarization and a strong personalization of political discourse. New Democracy and SYRIZA emerged as the most frequently referenced political entities, although increased political visibility was not necessarily associated with positive sentiment. Statistical findings suggest that the frequency of political references and their emotional tone do not always follow linear relationships. Overall, the study indicates that Twitter/X functions primarily as a space for political confrontation, emotional expression, and political mobilization, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of digital political communication. At the same time, the findings underline both the opportunities and the limitations of applying NLP and Sentiment Analysis techniques to Greek political discourse, particularly when working with relatively small and curated datasets.
