This postgraduate thesis examines the digital transformation of small and medium-sized enterprises and the factors that affect its implementation in the Greek business environment. The topic is important because SMEs form a central part of the Greek economy, while they often operate with limited resources, small workforces and gaps in digital skills. The study approaches digital transformation not as the simple use of technological tools, but as a process that can affect the organization, management and daily operation of a business. The theoretical part draws on approaches such as the Technology–Organization–Environment framework, the Diffusion of Innovations theory, the Resource-Based View and Dynamic Capabilities. It also examines the position of Greek SMEs in relation to European data. The empirical research was based on a qualitative approach and semi-structured interviews with 18 participants from SMEs across different sectors. The analysis showed that businesses already use digital tools, such as social media, electronic invoicing, digital payments, booking systems and communication applications. However, the use of these tools does not always imply substantial digital transformation. The main barriers identified were cost, lack of time, shortage of staff, limited digital skills, bureaucracy and difficulty in selecting appropriate solutions. The thesis concludes that the successful digital transformation of SMEs requires a combination of technology, managerial willingness, human skills, financial support and a simpler institutional environment.
